I realise that all these signs are completely understandable, and that there is a movement towards phonetic spelling online in texts and SMS messages. But how are people whose first language is not English supposed to look up these words in the dictionary?

  1. Dear Dr. Burton:
I am pleased to find your website. I am an alumna of University of Essex (M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics) and am scheduled to work for the University in Nagoya you used to work (although I was born, raised in Tokyo). I happend to find the interesting article on your experiences in Japan. I am looking forward to reading your comments on this site. I hope that I will be able to see you to talk about Japan and UK when you come to Japan or I have a chance to visit UK. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

    • Dear Akiko, Thank you for your comment and best wishes for your new job in Nagoya. I’ll be in Nagoya at some point next year so let’s keep in touch. In the mean time, メリー・クリスマス!
